Board Member On-boarding

Executive Services Corps (ESC)has worked with many Triangle nonprofits to improve their efforts to assess their memberships, develop a recruitment plan, and refresh their boards in terms of skills, experience and diversity. However, too often new board members find themselves confused or not understanding their roles and responsibilities. All boards have a unique set of governance structures and expectations, and the history of their organizations and critical issues of the recent past represent a crucial understanding for new members effectiveness.

One approach many boards have taken is to conduct a formal orientation for new members, often called “onboarding”. But they often need help in planning content, participation, and organization, a task that ESC is ready to provide.

In this workshop, we will explore approaches to board onboarding, and the role ESC Advisers can play in organizing and facilitating this important need for all nonprofit boards.
